I was curious about how being in the midst of nature for so long would impact me...will I be afraid, will I feel stronger, will I feel one with nature? The most prominent feeling was being awestricken by nature's beauty...nothing is more beautiful than seemingly "untouched" nature. While backpacking , as you can imagine, demands total concentration as you are going over rocks, mountains, are on cliff edges (when they have cables for you to hold onto you know you are in a precarious position!) and hiking on top of snow well over 8 feet high! While my body was obviously challenged and getting stronger, I became aware that my mind was getting clearer and clearer and my heart was growing. Physically I could feel my breathing improve dramatically, due to being in higher elevations and carrying a heavy pack. And then the snow! Oh the snow... so many stories about snow....such as waking up to our tents looking like igloos! And then, over time and days, your mind just naturally clears as you are focusing purely on the present moment. And the heart, how can the heart not grow within the beauty and energy of nature?. Tears welled up many times with the joy of what I was experiencing (I have included some of the photos on the website...to see click here...). And there are the people you meet, fellow hikers and adventurers and people that support you in town as you resupply and rejuvenate. Truly restores your faith in humanity..ie; a kind woman gives you a handful of cherries and a wrap, just because... and then the lady you just met at the post office offers you ride and her vacation home down the trail! These are just examples of the many wonderful people we met, and oh yes, especially the man that gave us a ride, 45 minutes out of his way, voluntarily... a trail angel for sure. And then moving from backpacking to our road trip down the Coast of Oregon and Northern California, continuing to do daily hikes every day... wow. It was mesmerizing: the huge rocks like Haystack Rock, the black sand and the sand dollar I found! The dunes we hiked through... and The Redwoods! woah..those are Wise Silent Giants which fill you with humility and awe. To top off the experience, all was done with my daughter.....laughter, oh the laughter, and the "you are doing great Mom!" and the challenges we faced together..all that time together and we still love each other (yes and still like each other too. :) We live in a beautiful country, I am so thankful for those that were determined to create and protect our National Parks such as William Gladstone Steel who fought from 1893 - 1902 to be sure Crater Lake was protected as a National Park. And of course, Teddy Roosevelt who we all should be so grateful for; what a legacy he has created for us all to benefit from. While I may have a sore knee from twisting it in that snow, I have a renewed sense of purpose and peace...I say this was a huge success.. With gratitude and appreciation for you all, and thank you for your patience during my time away...I'm back..and more to give than ever.... Love, Dalila |
